 assessment
all students who wish to complete this subject must write an essay of at least 2500 words, which will be the basis of assessment. essays must be compiled in a scholarly manner with footnotes indicating sources of information and contain a bibliography.
essays should be completed before 5pm on friday 13th may and delivered to the office of mr chen de-qiang, director , centre for urban and regional research, nankai university in tianjin or to your course co-ordinator in beijing or qingdao.
students should write an essay on one of the following:
1) why were the corporate structures, which produced rapid economic development, so different in japan and south korea compared to hong kong, taiwan and southern china(guangdong, fujian, and jiangnan)?
2) what structural impediments persuaded hong kong manufacturers to transfer most of their production facilities to guangdong from 1985 onwards?
3) after 15 years of economic crisis, japan’s economy showed the first signs of recovery in 2005. is japan’s recovery likely to again make it the major rival to the us in world trade?
4) why did the asia-pacific region enjoy such rapid economic integration and market-driven economic regionalization between 1980 and 1997? has the impetus towards regional economic integration changed in the first decade of the 21st century?
